What makes tattoo ink different from other inks?

My friend's cousin made his own tattoo gun and spelled his name on his arm. (He ended up spelling it wrong! LOL) And he did this on his own and out of things around his house. So I know it was different than what a tattoo shop would use. So how is the ink they use in the shop different?

Tattoo inks consist of a pigment and a carrier.

Tattoo inks are available in a range of colours which can then be thinned or mixed together to produce other colours and shades. Most professional tattoo artists purchase inks pre-made (known as predispersed inks), while some tattooers mix their own using a dry pigment and a carrier.

While manufacturers are not required to reveal their ingredients (and recipes may be proprietary), professional inks may be made from iron oxides (rust), metal salts, plastics or plant sources. Homemade or traditional tattoo inks may be made from pen ink, soot, dirt, blood, plant sources or other ingredients.

Carriers keep the ink evenly mixed and free from pathogens, and aid application. Carriers include ethyl alcohol (ethanol), water, propylene glycol, and glycerine. Homemade inks may contain various toxins such as alcohols or anti-freeze.

To ink or not to ink

There are more and more people are getting tattooed in today’s society, making being “inked” a main-stream. Tattoos are showing up on CEOs, doctors, lawyers and even on Christian ministers and musicians and it is reported that nearly one in four people ages 18 to 50 have at least one tattoo. All of this leads many people to ask, “Is it OK for a people to ink or not to ink?”

As a craft and an art form, tattoos can provide a physically intimate way to express your individuality and personality. It is a great way to shock others or memorialize an event to simply wanting to beautify their bodies with permanent artwork. It is a chance to stand out and broadcast who you really are. With the tons of tattoo designs to choose from, it would not be hard to come up with a tattoo to express your inner personality, your thoughts, beliefs or ideals. Others have themselves inked with memories they want to cherish forever likes special dates or symbols of love or friendship. Also, various colors of tattoo inks can lead you to a wonderful world and many people are enjoying the sound and feel of the tattoo needles on the skin during the process of tattooing. And after it has been finished, you will feel a sense of proud and achievement.

Well, just as there are pros and cons or positives and negatives to everything we do in life; tattoos too have some cons. The two main reasons for those who are said not to ink is the pain of getting a tattoo and the risks of tattoo inks and tattoo needles. Most people say that getting tattooed hurts. While the pain associated with each tattoo varies, and everyone experiences pain differently, there is almost always some level of discomfort. After all, your skin is being punctured thousands of times by little needles. So before getting tattooed, you need to consider that you may be sitting in a very uncomfortable position for an extended amount of time.

The primary concern with getting a tattoo is the possible health risks. If the needle has been used by others infected with certain blood-borne diseases, you may become exposed to the same bacteria and develop conditions like hepatis or HIV. Another possible concern is blood poisoning or a skin infection, if the needle happens to become contaminated by airborne or localized germs.
